The NOLIMITS UNITECH Imaging Facility at UNIMI has the goal to support imaging from in vitro to in vivo, and from nanoscopy to mesoscopy.


NOLIMITS provides users to streamline the management of human and material resources and share services in support of scientific research in the field of biological sciences as well as in other scientific fields such as material science, chemistry and agro-food.


NOLIMITS facilitates and lower as much as possible the threshold for scientists to get access to know-how for microscopy experiments.


NOLIMITS serves as a platform to provide high end microscopy training courses works in the frame of PhD schools and as a hub for sharing expertise and experiences.


NOLIMTS offers the following state-of-the-art optical and electronic microscope technologies:
Single Photon Confocal, Multiphoton confocal, FLIM and FRET-FLIM analyses, SIM Super Resolution, Spinning Disk with SoRa, Stereoscopic microscopy, Digitalized Slide Scanning, TEM and SEM, Workstations for image analyses.


NIOLIMITS provides expert technical consultation and support in every step of the imaging process from sample preparation to data analysis and publication.


In vivo experiments can be carried out with cell culture lines; tissue cultures; small animals; plants. Multiphoton microscope is placed in the animal care area, thus designed to perform in vivo imaging in mouse (Mus musculus) brain and muscles.

The ThermoFisher Scientific Talos L120C TEM is a transmission electron microscope uniquely designed for performance and productivity across a wide range of samples and applications, such as imaging of cells, cell organelles, single molecules, soft and hard materials, in brightfield and darkfield mode and 3D tomography
The microscope allows to set multiuser environments, and run multiuser applications from 2D imaging to 3D tomography and could be also configured for cryo-TEM applications, having an automatic cryo box .
This instrument has a thermoionic source (W or LaB6) andan adjustable high tension between 20-120kV, it offers a high level of automation and complete digital control over the different components of the microscope such as the gun, the apertures, the vacuum system and the stage; this improves the repeatability and reproducibility of results.
The Talos L120C is equipped with a LaB6 filament; typically, this cathode exhibits 10 times the brightness and more than 10 times the lifespan of the tungsten cathode. In electron microscope applications, these characteristics translate to a more beam current in a smaller spot, an improved resolution, and a less frequent cathode replacement.
The Talos L120C is characterised by a completely oil-free vacuum system comprising a membrane pump, a turbo-molecular pump and two ion getter pumps; a vacuum valve between the gun and the column is present to avoid that a possible loss of vacuum during the sample exchange can cause a swich off of the electron beam preserving the filament life.
Equipped with a single tilt stage with an excursion of about ±65 degrees and a dedicated software (TEM Tomography data acquisition software), it allows single tilt tomography in addition to routine imaging
The Talos L120C TEM is configured with two types of high-resolution digital cameras: the SmartCam Viewer, for fast high contrast screening which replaces the original fluorescent screen, and the Ceta 16M CMOS-based sensor camera, which assures rapid access to the highest quality images up to 650KX. This unique combination follows the natural workflow in TEM imaging: from the fast navigation to find the area of interest to the easy optimization of the image quality via optical adjustments to the final result.
Additionally, Thermo Scientific Maps Software enables intuitive image-based navigation over a whole sample along with easy correlation of results across imaging platforms. To retrieve large-area imaging at high resolution, the Maps Software automatically acquires and stitches images, documenting the entire area of interest with exceptional quality. The Maps Software supports image import, overlay, and alignment from other microscopes, such as scanning electron or light microscopes.
